As much as he didn't like it, Toby had stayed in contact with his mother. His mother and stepfather lived in Manhattan, where he and Erin had grown up. They'd recently moved into a new apartment and because his stepfather was an asshole, he wasn't helping in the move. So his mother had called him and asked for his help. Despite the enormous amount of resentment he felt toward his mother, she was still his mother. He'd helped her unpack boxes with the intention of leaving before his stepfather got back. Unfortunately he hadn't counted on his mother wanting to catch up and talk. He felt pity for her. His stepfather didn't hurt her physically or yell at her, but he scared her. She had once been a beautiful woman who'd caught the eye of Apollo. Now she was a fragile woman who didn't have the guts to protect her own children from a monster in a man's skin.
When his stepfather had arrived, Toby had done his best to ignore him and try to leave. That had upset the man who'd blocked him from leaving and childishly taunted the teenager. However, Toby wasn't the same as he'd been the last time he'd seen his parents. He was a claimed son of Apollo, an excellent archer, and a warrior. He'd gained confidence. If he wasn't going to let the Ares kids push him around, then why should he let his stepfather do the same? And he wasn't going to let him get to him. That had changed when his stepfather had asked about Erin and promptly insulted his little brother. He may o may not have threatened to shove an arrow up his ass after that.
He'd stormed out of the apartment, his mother calling after him and begging him to stay. His black eye, throbbing jaw, and most likely bruised ribs were all clear reasons for his departure. He didn't look back. Instead he got on a bus and got on several more buses until he was in California, where his grandparents and Erin lived. He'd arrived at his grandparents' doorstep and been smothered with affection. When he'd asked about Erin, however, their answer had shocked him. Erin wasn't living there. His mother had sent him off to some camp in California. His grandparents had assumed he'd known.
The only camp he could think of that Erin would be at in California was Camp Jupiter. Apollo was both a Greek and Roman god, after all. However that didn't help him at all. Why hadn't his brother gone to Camp Half-Blood?! What if he'd gone on a quest and got hurt?! Toby had rushed out of his grandparents' house, ignoring his aching body. He knew the relative location of Camp Jupiter, but not the exact coordinates. He'd searched for about an hour until he found the tunnel and crossed through it. He'd paused before to turn his Camp Half-Blood shirt inside out - he didn't need anyone thinking he was a Greek spy. Once he was out the tunnel, he shifted his quiver on his shoulder, having no utter clue where he should look for his brother - the thought of asking a Roman was unsettling.
