She’d been gone from Camp Jupiter for about three months straight, hunting with Lady Diana, and she had missed the camp. But it wasn’t the camp that she had missed most. Ariel missed her best friend, Flynn. He was the platonic love of her life, thankfully a love she hadn’t had to swear off. She couldn’t fall in love romantically, but Flynn was her soul mate in a best friend kind of way. And honestly, if he asked her, she was certain she would give up being a Hunter of Diana, despite how much fun her job was. Diana was, after all, the only Olympian that she liked.
Ariel stood just outside the Caldecott Tunnel with her arms folded across her chest. She’d been standing there for several minutes now, looking out over the camp and enjoying the view. She’d caught sight of Kyle, walking around and talking with someone she assumed was a Centurion – a pretty girl with long dark hair that looked familiar from her time at camp – maybe a daughter of Venus, she thought by the beauty the girl held.
Kyle had stopped and locked eyes with the hunter. While his expression hadn’t changed, there had been a clear presence of ice in his eyes and resentment when he looked at her. Their look lasted for about two seconds before he turned away and continued off with the Centurion. Ariel sighed and her shoulders slumped slightly as if under some weight. She was fairly certain that Kyle blamed her for a lot of things. She could remember him claiming he was happy for her when she joined the hunters, but she was certain that he was just happy to see her leave his brother’s side. He blamed her for Flynn’s bad relationship with the Olympians.
She used to blame herself, but Flynn was a big boy and could make his own decisions without her. Besides, Flynn didn’t seem to blame her so she didn’t find any reason to feel guilty anymore. She blamed the gods, but thinking about that would have caused her to mentally rant so she chose not to. She made a note to avoid Kyle during her stay, not that he intentionally sought her out. She was sure that he planned on avoiding her too. He used to be a sweet kid, she thought, and wondered what had happened.
She caught sight of Flynn and grinned, lowering her arms to her sides. “Hey Sparks!” she yelled over, waving her hand. She had her back of arrows strapped to her back with her bow slung over her shoulder and her dagger holstered to her belt. With a smile on her face, she ran over to him and flung her arms around him in a bear hug. “Gods, I’ve missed you!”
