I had a lover's quarrel with the world
It wasn't that Laura couldn't afford to go to the big, fancy comic book stores now, the places where they got new comics in as soon as they were released. The settlement to her mother's estate gave her a cash allowance each month sent straight to Camp Jupiter. She didn't spend it often - her frugal ways didn't change easily, even if the temptation to start spending all of her money existed.
She did, however, take days off she was given more frequently, and head into the nearest town that wasn't New Rome. There was a tiny, cramped second-hand bookstore there, full of mystery and magic in every corner. It bore the Mark of Athena - a little gray owl - on a corner of the door, and the proprietress looked vaguely Greek, which is how the store caught her eye. She found it on her way to the Wolf House to meet Lupa, and whenever she had a few bucks, she would spend it here.
Her tiny-but-precious collection of comic books originated from here, the source of her inspiration in the forge. The mythology section occasionally caught her eye, especially when a new camp of demigods was discovered, but today she bypassed it entirely. Selection-wise, it wasn't a great spot to get specific comic books, because they had an eclectic collection of everything under the sun, but Laura wasn't horribly picky. She found that the stories she liked were usually told by Marvel, though Wonder Woman had its moments, and the Iron Man she had found sent her brain exploding in all sorts of interesting and delightful directions.
Today, the shop was attended by the proprietress and her son--in-law. They greeted Laura with a cheery grin, and he pulled a handful of newer-than-usual comic books from behind the counter. He explained that since she seemed to prefer Iron Man stories, they pulled these aside so she could have first choice.
