This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
It might be a party in the square, but Laura's heart was not in celebrating with her fellow demigods. Christmas had always been a lean time for the legion, with demigods leaving to spend time with families not living in New Rome. Very little training went on, and Laura usually spent a good three or four days immersed in a corner of the First Cohort's common space, sharing proximity with the demigods she trained and lived with, but not truly part of them. It was a fine time for crafting, and the relative quiet lent itself to maths better than the chaos of her usual life.
This year, Laura stood as part of a loose circle of First Cohort demigods, close enough to be included with the group, but not quite so close as to be in the way of what conversation there was to be had. She held a partially full mug of hot chocolate, a dab of whipped cream stuck to her nose, warming her exposed fingers on the still warm ceramic. Her right pocket held the most important missive she might ever receive, and it was to this that her mind strayed while there was talk of festivities.
To young miss Alesi;
It is with pride that I announce that the legal struggles concerning your inheritance, dowry, and trust funds have been resolved. Attached, you will find full accountings of your funds, along with the information of those persons currently in charge of them. Hoping to find you well this holiday season, and congratulations!
Senātus Populus que Rōmānus
It was signed with all the official jargon, but a small slip of paper - wrapped around a small stack of notes totaling nearly one hundred and fifty dollars - left her no doubt as to the identity of her champion.
Don't spend it all in one place, Laura. Sincerely, Laverne Castellano
Laverne Castellano had served in the legion at the same time as Camille Alesi, a fellow centurion, and later a trusted advisor once Camille ascended to praetor. She had been Laura's staunch champion to the legal system, ever since her parentage came into contention. Laura sometimes wondered if her involvement was due to her heritage - she was a legacy of Orbona, the goddess of those who had lost their children - or her friendship with her mother.
Either way, the long legal battle was over. The rest of the papers detailing things like her estate - estate? (that was a concept difficult to wrap her head around. Somewhere in Nevada, there was a house with her name on the deed. For a homeless urchin from Oakland who could barely remember her mother, that was a heady thing.) - and funds lay on her bed, along with small package which she could not bring herself to open just yet.
