Toby had woken up in a cold sweat around midnight. He had sat up in his bed, chills sparking up his spine. He placed the palm of his hand against his temple and took and let out a few shaky breaths. He had dreamt that he and Erin was back with their mother and celebrating Christmas. The dream had turned into a nightmare when their step-father had burst through the door and shoved his way past their mother. He had tried to shield his little brother but their mother had grabbed him and held him away so all he could do was watch as their step-father beat his brother and scream at the man to stop.
That was when he had woken up. The nightmare had been very vivid. It consisted of a fear he had always had while Erin lived with him and their parents. He had always feared being unable to protect Erin. He shoved his blankets off him and shakily got to his feet, deciding that he needed fresh air. He quietly exited the cabin, closing the door behind him so not to wake any of his half-siblings up. He sat down on the front steps that led up to the porch, pulling his legs up against his chest and wrapping his arms around his legs.
He sat there silently until it was around two in the morning. He couldn’t fall back asleep. His mind was awake and on alert. He realized with a sinking feeling that he didn’t know where his brother was. Was he still with their grandma? Or had he moved back in with their mom and step-father? The more he thought about his little brother, he finally realized something. He had known all along that he had the same dad as Erin.
The memory was small and barely there, but he remembered before his mother had married Tucker. He had been about two years old and a man had visited. He didn’t remember much, but he remembered warmth and the feeling of safety. And considering he was about two years older than Erin, he guessed that was the first, and so far only, time he had met his dad, Apollo. That meant that Erin was a demigod too…
But he wasn’t at camp. Worst case scenarios kept spinning through the teenager’s head and he put his face in his hands. Lifting his head up and running a hand through his hair, he then stared down at his hands, holding them with their palms up. He didn’t pray to his dad often and he felt guilty about that. For all he knew, Apollo hadn’t abandoned him, but was watching over him.
He bitterly wondered where the god had been when their step-father had been abusing him, but he pushed that thought back as quickly as it had come. He fidgeted with his hands awkwardly, not sure what to say. “Hey um… Apollo? Dad?” He didn’t know how he was supposed to refer to the god. It felt nice to have someone to call Dad, but he didn’t know if it was appropriate to call Apollo that. After all, he hadn’t grown up with the god acting like a father.
“I uh… I just,” he kept his voice low, aware that he was still sitting on the steps. He didn’t want to risk waking up one of his siblings. “I wanted to ask you to watch over Erin… Y’know, my little brother? Your son? Just… Just watch over him and keep him safe… Please.”
